Description:
Cooneana Heritage Centre contains seven old buildings that include four cottages, the Rhondda Collieries' old and newer (1974) offices, and Cooneana Homestead built in 1868 that is in its original position and has had work done to show the unusual architecture and changes over time. There is also a working blacksmith shop and another area where metal artisans fabricate decorative items and knives. Three sides of the site are bordered by bushland, the fourth border is with an open cut mine site. There is coal mining equipment on display outside on the fourth border. Inside the buildings are various displays - the main part of Cooneana Heritage Centre is a museum. However one of the cottages is home to the Ipswich Genealogical Society and contains archives and desks. Another cottage is home to the Ipswich Historical Society Spinners and Weavers and contains spinning wheels, looms, displays of sewing machines and examples of textile crafts.
