Description:The heritage-listed fort complex, built in 1880, is situated on the southern bank at the mouth of the Brisbane River. The fortress is a typical nineteenth century garrison - a pentagonal fortress concealed behind grassy embankments - surrounded for greater protection by a water-filled moat, now with only two of the 64-pound cannons which protected the city from any maritime invasion are only used today for ceremonial purposes. The site also features tunnels, gun pits and several brick military barracks. The military discontinued use of the property after world war two, unfortunately leaving the site to abandoned to Mother Nature and a spate of fires which destroyed historic timber buildings, leaving only the stone structures present today. Bought and maintained by Ampol Oil in 1956- throughout the following decades, in 1986 Ampol Oil returned the property to the Government to create the Fort Lytton National Park in 1990. The site is open free on Sundays, most public holidays and other special occasions. Access to the park at other times is by appointment only, and is subject to fees. Located 65.9km (40 miles/ 45mins) from Village Roadshow Studios. The nearest airport is Brisbane Airport (BNE). The closest POH, Brisbane City, is 20kms (12 miles/ 25mins) away.
