The heritage-listed fort complex, built in 1880, is situated on the southern bank at the mouth of the Brisbane River. The fortress is a typical nineteenth century garrison - a pentagonal fortress concealed behind grassy embankments - surrounded for greater protection by a water-filled moat, now with only two of the 64-pound cannons which protected the city from any maritime invasion are only used today for ceremonial purposes. The military discontinued use of the property after world war two, unfortunately leaving the site to abandoned to Mother Nature and a spate of fires which destroyed historic timber buildings, leaving only the stone structures present today. The site is open 10am – 4pm Sundays only.
