The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest reef system, comprised of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching over 2,600 kilometres (1,600 miles) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 square miles).
This underwater botanical garden is one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth. It is a living home to over 6,600 species of marine plant and animal species including 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 species of molluscs and 360 types of coral.
Underwater, the Great Barrier Reef is the seemingly endless variety of corals, displaying every conceivable colour, shape and form. The gorgeous and positively gaudy fish and other marine animals that live among the coral reefs afford brilliant displays of multicoloured movement. Giant clams and small shells, starfish and sea cucumbers, anemones, turtles, eels, rays, sponges – there is just so much to see on the spectacular Great Barrier Reef.
Port Douglas is the closest town and departure point to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, with the outer reef accessible within 1.5 hours.
