Magnetic Island is located 8 kms off the coast of the major regional city of Townsville. Accessible by ferry from Townsville to Nelly Bay.

This mountainous island has small towns scattered over the island plus open eucalypt woodlands surrounded by coral reefs with rocky granite headlands and towering hoop pines stand sentinel over tranquil sandy bays. Magnetic Island has many resorts, hotels and villas; shops and car hire. NPRSR permits for activities within the National Parks of the Island, outside parks-Townsville City Council.

Magnetic Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and just over half of the island's 5,184 ha is protected as national park with excellent walking tracks to natural and historical sites such as the World War II Forts.

The nearest airport is Townsville Airport (TSV) approx. 2 hour flight from Brisbane Airport (BNE).
