Mareeba Region - Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park
Australia / Chillagoe, Queensland
Location ID: #10067689
Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park has spectacular limestone caves, a historic smelting site, and Aboriginal rock art galleries. The National Park is situated to the west of Cairns and its dark caves feature flowstones, stalagmites, and stalactites. Fossils of a number of animals have been found in the caves.
The Park has rugged limestone outcrops and a diversity of wildlife. Bats are ever-present in the caves. Birds and Wallabies abound in the surrounding areas.
The smelters site provides an excellent example of the mineral smelting technology of the early 1900s. It has shelters, walking tracks, and a viewing platform.
In the wet season, it may be hard to reach the National Park. The caves themselves are not ideal for internal filming as access is limited due to the animal populations living there. The caves can only be accessed via wooden foot paths.
Located roughly 1900km (1180 miles / 23 hrs) from Village Roadshow Studios. The nearest airport is Cairns Airport (CNS). Flights take approximately two-and-a-half hours from Brisbane Airport (BNE). The closest POH, Brisbane City, is around 1850km (1150 miles / 22 hrs 30 mins) away.
